Text of the Address delivered in New York at an Inter- Faith Meeting Shortly after the Tuesday Sept.11, Terrorist attack on WTC.

Encounters between people of different faiths and cultural traditions impel us to try and establish a common ethical and moral grounds for fulfillment of human aspirations to live in peace, justice and dignity. Recollecting the history of sixteenth and seventeenth centuries A.D., in the Indian subcontinent, when two world cultures - of Hinduism and Islam - created conditions acutely similar to the concerns now-a-days, there was widespread unrest, conflict, and violence in the whole subcontinent. In such a situation God chose Guru Nanak as his own messenger to blaze the path of amity, understanding and peace on earth. He was the only Prophet acceptable to both cultures of Hinduism and Islam.

Ultimate Reality : Sikhism is entirely a new dispensation with a new Scripture and its own script, ideology and concept of the Ultimate Reality. It gives a new way to understand and lead one’s life which is based on logic and reasoning, is scientific in approach and appeals to the heart and minds of all men.

God is conceived as the only Truth which is beyond human comprehension, but perceived in His creation and felt as dwelling in every human heart. God is conceived as existing even before creation - in a state of self meditation in a complete void. From this Primal Void, God created His own conscious light, which permeated everywhere. Through the Word of God five elements of Nature were created, and from the Primal Void, God created sun, moon, seven seas, heaven and earth. He created all the living beings from the five elements and put His own conscious light in every being. It is due to presence of the God’s light that life, consciousness and senses in the bodies of creatures are capable of all their actions.

It is from the Word of God that all living beings exist and perform their role as per His divine order and commandments. The whole creation is divided into the temporal and spiritual domains, but function directly under the will of the Lord. Both domains are intertwined and subject to God’s direction, command and control. God is transcendent as well as immanent in Nature.

EGO-Centric: Man has been mostly obsessed with his bodily needs and fulfillment of worldly responsibilities. He lacks true knowledge and devotees little time for spiritual education or necessity for moral and ethical values. He has strong reservations and doubts on the existence of God. He is mainly ego-centric and acts impulsively on the dictates of his sensual desires. This ignorance, doubts and skepticism for any higher spiritual authority, creates a wall - or veil - in his mind which separates his whole being from the Creator or the source of his existence. This is the main reason for all his ills.

Sikhism emphasizes that all human sickness, misery and suffering is due to forgetfulness of the observance of Divine laws which leads to straying from the righteous path. Egoism is the true "Satan" which misleads man. Man is always under the sway of his five sense-organs which direct him towards the path of lust, anger, greed, possessions and pride. Man is constantly haunted by these five devils.

The Guru Enlightens: Without the intervention of a true Divine Preceptor or Enlightener, with whose guidance, man can save himself, he is doomed to the path of hell and annihilation. Under the guidance of greatsaviours and messengers man has made great progress and established great institutions of religious and spiritual order, but without a universal common faith based on mutual consultation and reasoning, saving the world from annihilation will be impossible.

Sikhism incorporates not only the teachings of the Sikh Gurus but many other saints from different strata of society and cultural backgrounds, having personal experience of similar realization of God. The teachings of Sikhism meet the challenges of the modern age and supplant and fulfill all former dispensations. Unless we rise to the occasion and meet the daunting challenges of the New Age collectively, we are destined to perish within this materialistic civilization, which has sown its own seeds of destruction in the form of powerful weapons of annihilation.

The Sikh spirituality is based on contemplation of the "Word" of God revealed through His beloved, who sang the songs of glory in the dialect of masses, irrespective of their caste, creed, ethnicity or nationality. This is the path available to all mankind in this age and times.

Peace on Earth: Realisation of peace, justice and protection of the earth depends upon the insight and readiness of mankind to act justly. To act justly, minds and hearts of the whole humanity must be made conscious of their human responsibility and duty. To act rightly, moral fabric of humanity must be made on the principles of global ethics. The ethical life can only be possible, if humanity’s knowledge and insight is based on sound overview of the world and its creator and relationship of mankind to its creator.

To inculcate correct view of life and ethical behaviour, the right spiritual education must be based on universal human standards, acceptable to all irrespective of their diverse religious paths and cultures.

The path of God through NAAM is the only true spiritual Path where man’s consciousness can reach its Creator. This is a direct and universally acceptable path. God manifests in His Name. Name is the substratum of all Phenomena. Name is the existence and support of entire creation. Name is the Ultimate Reality and the true Name is the WORD manifested in the world.

Cosmic Order: Name resides in our consciousness although very few realize it. Name is the writ of God and cosmic order. Name permeates in all creatures and is hidden in man’s heart. With the Word of God man’s heart can be awakened and illumined. Name is the supreme knowledge and wisdom contained in all the scriptures. Mankind can be united as one, by following the true path of God Realisation. Other paths lead to egoism and bondage, disharmony and discord, hatred and enemity, conflict and suffering.

In the words of Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan ,late President of India "all barriers of seas and mountains will give way before the call of eternal truth which is set forth with freshness of feelings and fervour of devotion in the Adi Granth".

According to eminent historian Arnold Toynbee: "Mankind’s religious future may be obscure, yet one thing can be foreseen: the living higher religions are going to influence each other more than ever before, in these days of increasing communication between all parts of the world and all branches of the human race. In this coming religious debate, the Sikh religion, and its scripture the Adi Granth, will have something of special value to say to the rest of the world. This religion is itself a monument of creative spiritual intercourse between two traditional religions whose relations have otherwise not been happy."
